Lisa Flowers Ross

Artist Biography

Lisa Flowers Ross is a Boise, Idaho based artist who creates colorful, abstract, nature-inspired textile artworks made with fabrics that she hand-dyes and stitches together. Basic shapes, lines and a focus on color are the main components that repeat themselves throughout her body of work.

Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at Visions Museum of Textile Art, CA, Yellowstone Art Museum, MT and Woman Made Gallery, IL, among others, and is included in private and public collections. She has created public artworks for the cities of Boise, Meridian, Eagle and Ketchum, Idaho as well as Hillsboro, Oregon. Flowers Ross has completed artist residencies in several western states in remote locations where she gathered inspiration for her Field Studies series. The series celebrates the variety of color, landscapes and geological elements the western states hold. There are no man made structures depicted in the work. The focus is on those places that are undisturbed by humans, to remind the viewer of the beauty and importance of nature and encourage them to want to preserve our wonderful national parks, wildlife preserves and natural areas. The artist is excited to continue this work at the Taft-Nicholson artist residency.

Flowers Ross holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art (Drawing), as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Business. She is a juried artist member of the professional groups, Boise Open Studio Collective Organization and Studio Art Quilt Associates, of which she also serves on the 
exhibition committee. She has been the recipient of grants from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and from the Alexa Rose Foundation.

Artist Statement

In my artwork, I am seeking to find the simple essence of a thought, idea or object; to notice things that are passed by in our busy lives or to see something in a different way. Abstraction is a common thread in my work and, in some ways, is my attempt to simplify the world I see around me and to narrow the scope to what I feel is most essential, basic and necessary.
Most of my artworks are inspired by nature or daily observations of my surroundings. The natural world and environment are very important to me. I do not want to improve on nature or represent it realistically, but try to portray its simple beauty, find its underlying elements and present it in a unique way.
