Janessa Lewis

Janessa Lewis is a South Asian American artist from Utah. She holds a B.F.A. in Studio Arts and is an M.F.A. Candidate in Printmaking from the Tamarind Institute and the University of New Mexico. Her artistic practice is an homage to Western spaces that are eroding from unsustainable exploitation and constant urban development. Her process interweaves ecological research and time spent observing wild spaces. As a result, she collects drawn, painted and printed studies that examine the complexities of land use and society’s relationship with natural resources. Fascinated by natural quotidian subjects, namely rocks and bark; she creates site-specific pieces that encapsulate the essence, evolution, and erosion of a place from natural and unnatural causes. She aims to influence toward a more sustainable relationship with the earth and to shift from a human-centric to an ecocentric society.

 

Her work has been exhibited in various galleries regionally. She has curated various exhibitions, including the SPRING/BREAK Art Show in Los Angeles. She has attended the Tamarind Institute Stone Lithography Workshop.
